What if we struggle with doubt?
Quick Answer: What if we struggle with doubt? We know God loves us, but what if we are faithless to God? We may worry that our doubts will somehow disconnect us from God. But any Christian can experience any thought at any time, and this includes thoughts of doubt. And God is clear that if we are faithless, He remains faithful to us, no matter what (2 Timothy 2:13).
Diving Deeper: We all have doubts. And with doubts comes the fear of somehow “doubting away” our position with God. But the new covenant is not founded on our faithfulness to God. No, the new covenant is based on God’s promise to Himself (Hebrews 6:18). God swore to Himself that He would remain faithful to His people forever.
God is still faithful when we are faithless or doubt some aspect of His goodness (2 Timothy 2:13). God has everything rigged so we cannot fall out of His covenant. So, if we have a faithless thought about God, we can rest assured that He’ll continue to be faithful to us (2 Timothy 2:13; Hebrews 13:5).
Any Christian can experience any thought at any time. In fact, the power of sin often feeds us thoughts (Romans 7:17, 20) and then accuses us of having them (Revelation 12:10)! The key is to know that we are not the sum total of our thoughts. We are the sum total of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection!
In this life, we walk by faith and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). This means we must trust in what we do not see, and often this can be a challenge. Yet, we must remember our security in Jesus Christ and be assured that regardless of what we feel or think in a given moment, we have entered God’s rest. And He will never let us go!
Let’s Make It a Conversation!
1. Have you ever believed that doubt might cut you off from God? What was that like?
2. How does the new covenant (God promising God) speak into this issue?
3. React to this statement: We’re not saved by our consistent thought life. We’re saved by the death and resurrection of Christ.
