Is masturbation a sin?

Quick Answer: Is masturbation a sin? While pornography and sexual fantasy are clearly sinful, the physical act of masturbation is not mentioned in Scripture and seems to be an issue of conscience for each individual.

Diving Deeper: While masturbation is often treated as a sin in religious circles, the Bible is actually silent on the topic. In Genesis 38:9, Onan spills his seed instead of impregnating his brother’s wife to carry on the family line. Some point to this passage and relate it to masturbation. Because Onan’s actions were viewed by God as disobedience, the conclusion is drawn that masturbation is an act of disobedience. But this is an interpretive leap as the passage is not about masturbation at all. It’s actually about the failure of Onan to be a kinsman redeemer.

While Scripture does not directly address masturbation, there are a few obvious truths we can use to ensure the act is not sinful for us. First, Scripture is clear that sexual lust is a sin (Matthew 5:28). It stands to reason that when lust is combined with masturbation, such as when pornography or fantasy is included, then masturbation is sinful. However, many well-respected Christian theologians, counselors, and therapists believe it’s possible to masturbate without sinning (though for many, it’s nearly impossible due to the sinful habits they’ve formed with pornography or fantasy).

In a marriage, it’s crucial that the spouse be involved in the conversation about masturbation. Husbands and wives are sexual partners (1 Corinthians 7:5) and are to be intimately involved in each other’s sexuality. If masturbating hurts our spouse or our marriage in any way, then we need to steer clear of it. God wants us to enjoy a healthy marriage filled with desire for our spouse.

Ultimately, masturbation is a matter of conscience. It might be perfectly healthy for some such as those who spend much time apart, or who are in a difficult family situation where a spouse is sick. However, it can be sinful for someone who has a history of associating the act of masturbation with pornography, fantasy, and lust.
