Is God angry with you?

Quick Answer: Is God angry with you? You might be tempted to think God is angry with you, but this is not the truth. God loves the whole world so much that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to take away your sins and offer you eternal life (John 3:16-17). This reveals God’s outrageous love for you! And consider this: What is the only thing that angers God? Sin. What does He do with your sins through Jesus? When you call upon the name of the Lord to be saved, He takes them away, once for all. Therefore, there’s no reason left for God to be angry with believers. Even the message for unbelievers is that “God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them” and “we implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God” (2 Corinthians 5:19-20).

Diving Deeper: Believers often imagine God is angry with them. But the Scripture is clear that God loves us so much that He sent His Son to die for us. A God who was angry or fed-up with His creation wouldn’t go to such lengths to rescue us! Only a God of perfect love would sacrifice His only Son to save us from the tyranny of sin.

This doesn’t mean God is emotionless. God does express anger, but His anger is not toward people. He is angry at sin (Romans 1:18). God hates sin, because it tainted His creation and is innately opposed to His nature. God has wrath toward sin, but He did not send His Son to condemn people (John 3:17). Remember, God’s kindness – not His wrath – leads people to repentance (Romans 2:4).

When we receive Jesus as our Savior, we are at peace with God. The sin issue between us and God is over (Romans 5:1). Sure, Scripture says believers can “quench” and “grieve” the Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19; Ephesians 4:30). But this is not the same as saying God is angry with His children. God is simply concerned for our well-being when His Spirit is not expressed through us.

God is only angered by sin. But when we believed in Christ, we were perfectly cleansed of all sins (Hebrews 10:14), and we were made righteous to the core (2 Corinthians 5:21). For these reasons, God is never angry with His children. In fact, He always delights in who we are!

Let’s Make It a Conversation!
1. Have you ever felt like God was angry with you? Why or why not?
2. How does both your forgiveness and your righteousness play into your peace with God?
3. React to this statement: God only hates sin, but Jesus took our sins away forever!
