Is gambling a sin?

Quick Answer: Is gambling a sin? Scripture does not say gambling is sinful. All things are permissible, however, not all things are beneficial (1 Corinthians 10:23). This means we need to determine whether gambling, or any activity, is mastering us or if we are simply doing it for enjoyment (like other activities that costs money). If we have any history of gambling addiction, godly wisdom and discernment would have us steer clear of it. (Note: There is a reason the casinos are so large and nice: They are typically going to win more often than you do!).

Diving Deeper: While some believe gambling is a sin, this is not actually taught in the Bible. So, we need to be careful not to make “no gambling” into a law for Christians. Here, we might apply this truth: “All things are permissible, but not all things are profitable” (1 Corinthians 10:23).

This means we are free to engage in gambling, but at the same time we should not be foolish if we do. We should recognize gambling can be very addictive. And most of us cannot afford to gamble, unless it’s only small amounts for brief entertainment.

The bottom line is that we are to engage in activity that is edifying to ourselves and others, not activity that leads to sin mastering us. So, whatever we decide to do with our time and money, it’s important to remember that some activities are more beneficial than others. And if we have any history of addiction to gambling, it is best to avoid it altogether.

2. React to this statement: All things are permissible, but not all things are profitable.
3. Read 1 Corinthians 6:12. How does the idea of “I will not be mastered by anything” help to bring clarity?
