How do you stop comparing yourself to other people?

Quick Answer: How do you stop comparing yourself to other people? We compare ourselves when we forget our righteousness and our new identity in Christ. Scripture says we are the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21). We cannot improve upon this!

Diving Deeper: When we believe in Jesus, we are forgiven of all sins (Hebrews 8:12), and we become brand new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17). However, we still struggle with a host of unhealthy thinking. One of the most prominent struggles we humans have is comparing ourselves to others.

We may feel there’s something missing in our own lives, and we see others who supposedly embody all that we are not. They make more money than we do; they have a better family life, they own a better car; they take better care of their bodies, and the list goes on. Before long, we feel as if we don’t measure up.

However, God is clear that we do measure up: We are the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21). Scripture also reveals we are seated with Christ in Heaven (Ephesians 2:6). We’ve already arrived at the top of the ladder. This means there’s no value in comparing ourselves to others (2 Corinthians 10:12). To do so is to essentially chase after more righteousness when we already possess it.

When we compare ourselves to others, we are simply confused about our own place in God’s Kingdom. We need to know our own valued place in Christ. Consider what God has built you to be. You are a unique canvas that the Master Painter Himself desires to paint on. He has given you a purpose that only you can carry out. So, learn who you are in Christ, and then just be yourself. After all, you’re the best person for the job!

Let’s Make It a Conversation!
1. When we compare ourselves to others, what are we really looking for?
2. How does knowing our righteousness factor in?
3. What unique characteristics (desires, talents, interests) has God given you?
4. React to this statement: Your only calling is to be exactly who God made you. Everything else will frustrate.
