How do you become a Christian?

Quick Answer: How do you become a Christian? The word “Christian” was first used in Acts 11:26, and it refers to people who believe in the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ for forgiveness and eternal life (John 3:16; Romans 6:23; Galatians 2:20; Colossians 3:1; Romans 10:13). We become Christians by believing the same message about Jesus Christ and receiving Him into our lives.

Diving Deeper: The word “Christian” has been hijacked, so the term means different things to different people. We don’t become a Christian by performing certain spiritual tasks (going to church, getting baptized, doing good works) or by adhering to conservative political views.

Scripture is clear that Christians are those who have believed in the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ for forgiveness and eternal life (John 3:16; Romans 6:23; Romans 10:13; Galatians 2:20; Colossians 3:1). Christians are all who have received salvation by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9).

So, how does one become a Christian? The same way as those in the days of the early church did (Acts 11:26). We are saved when we believe Jesus is the Son of God, that He died for our sins, and that He was raised from the dead to give us new life. We open the door of our hearts, and we receive His  resurrection life as a free gift.

We are Christians, righteous and blameless children of God from the moment we believe (2 Corinthians 5:21; Colossians 1:22).

Let’s Make It a Conversation!
1. How have you seen the word “Christian” used, or even abused?
2. Based on the true definition, would you consider yourself a Christian? Why or why not?
3. What obstacles (if any) currently are keeping you from believing the Gospel?
