Won’t too much grace lead to even more sinning?

Quick Answer: Won’t too much grace lead to even more sinning? Some believe an overemphasis on God’s grace will somehow lead to more sinning in the Christian life. But Titus 2:11-12 says the opposite: Grace is what encourages godly living. So, we need more grace, not less, if we want to overcome temptation. Being afraid of too much grace is like being afraid of too much victory over sin (Romans 6:14).

Diving Deeper: Can we have too much grace? While some teach that “too much grace” will lead to immorality in the Christian life, Scripture actually says the opposite.

Titus 2:11-12 states that God’s grace teaches us to “deny ungodliness” and “worldly desires.” It also teaches us to live “sensibly, righteously, and in a godly manner.” So, according to Titus, we need to focus on grace more, not less, if we desire to live uprightly.

In Romans 6:1-3, Paul speaks of grace in a similar way. Paul affirms that if we sin, then grace does increase. But he then says that believers have “died to sin” (Romans 6:2). We died to sin when we were united with Christ in His death and resurrection (Romans 6:5-6). This means we are no longer slaves of sin but are now slaves of righteousness (Romans 6:18). God’s grace has cured us of our predisposition toward sin. This means, deep down, you actually don’t want to sin. You’re no longer compatible with it. You’re allergic to sin and addicted to Jesus (Romans 6:11)!

While God’s grace does increase if we sin, it also teaches us to live godly lives. We don’t need to be afraid of grace. It is by God’s grace that we have received a new heart, a new spirit, and God’s Spirit living in us. We’re designed to be inspired from within by God’s grace!

Let’s Make It a Conversation!
1. Have you been afraid of trusting God’s grace? Why or why not?
2. React to this statement: New-hearted, slaves of righteousness can afford to live under grace.
3. How exactly do you think God’s grace teach us to live godly lives? Explain.
