How do you set your mind on things above?

Quick Answer: How do you set your mind on things above? Colossians 3:2 encourages us to set our minds on “things above.” We do this by making the conscious decision to think truth-filled thoughts and take every idea captive to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5; Philippians 4:8-9). The more we set our minds on truth, the more we will enjoy the reality of our new identity in Christ and God’s love for us (Romans 12:2).

Diving Deeper: The world is a noisy place. Thousands of distractions, and even lies, vie for our attention. In the midst of all the chaos, it can be challenging to set our minds on “things above.” So, how do we do it?

We all need to fuel up on God’s grace. This could mean revisiting our favorite verses, books or messages on God’s grace and our new identity in Christ. Whatever we do, the key is to take every thought captive to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5; Philippians 4:8-9). We can make a conscious decision, each moment, to submit our thoughts to the Spirit of God who indwells us. We can let His truth reprogram our thoughts so that the lies no longer deceive us.

As we make the choice to think on truth, it’s also important to remember that Truth Himself lives within us in the Person of Christ. His Spirit is constantly teaching us (Philippians 1:19; John 16:13), so we are not having to set our minds on truth in our own power. Rest assured that it is first and foremost God’s heart and God’s agenda to teach us the truth that sets us free!

Let’s Make It a Conversation!
1. What are some lies that ensnare you?
2. For each lie, what is the corresponding truth that sets you free?
3. What are some ways you can “fuel up” on God’s grace?
